Accessible Pedestrian Signals is a very official sounding name for talking street signals. In my area the city has begun installing these devices across busy intersections. This is all very cool but what you might not realize is that each crossing button has a speaker attached produces the voice part of the system and each speaker pings really loudly on a regular rhythm. I could hear them inside my car with windows up, air on and the stereo playing nirvana “at a reasonable volume”.
This APS system sounds like a misbehaving little kid smacking two hollow metal pipes together. Or rather 8 misbehaving little kids smacking two hollow metal pipes together. I just what to set the whole dam thing on fire.

Although most of the attendees only had 3 or 4 of their original teeth this did not stop their good humor or lust for a good time. They coax 20 "female" contenders 2 at a time in to the middle of a raised pit of coleslaw to wrestle. Last one standing wins a prize. I didn't catch what that prize was. The announcer was so drunk I believe he was talking with the mic inside his mouth. I cannot understand why every participant did not blow chunks from the stench. In the hot afternoon sun of Florida coleslaw does not keep.

On a high note I spotted Mardi-Gras style bead for boob flash barter. A must for every drunken rally and always welcome. If only I could find a way to encourage this activity on a regular basis.

Everyone is talking about how Apples move to the Intel platform is going to reshape the OS landscape. What about hardware? Dell has fought and lost to Intel many times over selling AMD chips. So much in fact AMD is suing Intel over “Predatory Tactics”. Basically Intel repeatedly threatens to pull its sweet heart deal from Dell if they sell any AMD chips.

Apple (Steve Jobs) always states, “Apple is a hardware manufacture”. Intel must have cut a sweet chip deal with Apple or the switch to MacIntel could never have happened. I wonder how Dell is going to react when Intel starts selling chips to Apple at heavily slashed rates. I have not gotten a chance to fully check this out yet but it does look promising. The app is cross-platform (windows, Mac, Linux).

It does not have as many features as similar Adobe or Sonic Foundry products but it is free as in beer and you can’t beat that with keyboard.

Mac Spyware

With the release of Tiger and the new dashboard widgets someone has finally created spyware for the Mac. Its name is zaptastic and although it is just annoying some security concerns arise. Spyware is on the way for the innocent Mac user. I don't think spyweare will be as prevalent on the Mac as it is on windows but that is only because more people use windows.

However the culture of Mac users might become fertile ground for spyware venders. Mac users have historically disregarded security. Hopefully that history does not cause spyware writers to target Mac's as windows users start hardening their machines.

I don’t know if any of my readers have heard of a new thing called Podcasting but I have been doing it for several weeks. No I don’t provide content but I do listen to just about every cast I can get my grubby little hands on. What is Podcasting?

Podcasting is a great new way of distributing audio and video (mostly audio) automatically. When a site offers a Podcast feed you can subscribe to the feed using Podcasting software and any new items will be automatically downloaded to your computer. As the name implies, if you have a portable audio player, the files can also be copied to the player.

YOU DON’T NEED AN IPOD to partake in the fun. The software I use is called iPodder and is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. So, join in on the revolution you might like it. You might even want to make a Podcast of your own.
